The last day (sob)

Today is Squidge’s last day at nursery. It is a bittersweet day. Half of me is ecstatic on her behalf. She’s beautiful, she’s smart and she’s going to learn so much at school. I loved school [nerd alert] and I can’t wait for her to come home with her little head packed full of exciting new things that she’s bursting to share with me. It’s as if I can live that part of my life again.
On the other hand I am gutted. As I watched her bounce from room to room with glee this morning I realised that she was growing up far faster than I could keep up. One minute she spent a lot of time being cut out of babygro’s because of her penchant for enormous poos, and the next she’s having a conversation with me about the merits of cereal or porridge for breakfast. Where did my baby go?
Today her nursery will be holding a little farewell party for her. I won the Daft Mother Of The Year award again because I went all the way to Tesco for the Big Shop and to buy A Cake for her farewell party. Did I buy the cake? No.
I remembered the cake two aisles away but, as is my wont lately, forgot about it as I struggled to find wholemeal bread (you’d think that would be easy, but no) and tried to stop Squidge from eating the biscuits before I’d paid for them.
So Husband has scuttled off to the shops to get her a cake. She’s busy enjoying her last day at nursery. And I am sitting here wondering if it’s ok to blink. You see, if I blink, will I open my eyes and see a grown-up Squidge about to go to uni?
Sniff.
