Little Diva: The bad hair day

So, you know how I am always banging on about how curly Squidge’s hair is? How difficult it is to manage? I thought I would take a photo of her hair and how it looks in the morning so you could see what I start with each time. I apologise for the quality of the shots, it was a rushed morning and I hadn’t had enough coffee…

So, without further ado, this is how Squidge’s hair looks before we start on her cute girls hairstyles every day…

And here is a close-up:

No, she didn’t arm wrestle bears all night. At least, not that I’m aware of…

And this is how she looked after we did our cute girls hairstyle for today…

Little Diva: The double side braid

cute girls hairstylesStill hot with inspiration, I decided to copy some of the ideas from other cute girl’s hairstyle blogs on the net and incorporate them into my own design. As there are so many incredibly talented people doing girls hair out there, this idea is definitely not original, but I am pretty proud of it nonetheless.

For this hairdo you’ll need your rat tail comb, spray (water or detangler), a brush and four hairbands. I use the tiny black ones that you get in a pack of about 50 from Boots. They cost about £1 and are fabulously stretchy.

Brush the hair until it is straight and knot free, then divide the hair across the top from the top of the left ear to the top of the right. Then part the hair again down the middle from the forehead to the base. Clip off each section as you go. You should now have four sections.

Starting at the top of the right section, French braid the hair for about 1/3 of the way until you have run out of hair to slip into the braid and then finish off by plaiting to the end.

Tie it off with an elastic and then take the hair that is clipped apart below and, using the plait as one strand, proceed to braid the hair again until the plait runs to the end. The side should now look like this:

I am willing to bet that my explanation was a bit sketchy so hopefully that pic gives you a better idea. Essentially you are using one plait to make another and creating a double braid look that’s quite funky.

Now, repeat the process on the other side so that it looks like this:

Ta da! You’re done! You have a really cute girls hairstyle that will take you about 10 minutes to complete and that looks really fabby for the school run. It is also really robust as this is the only style that has withstood the drama of the day!

Little Diva: Cute side twist pony

This hairdo was my very first invented one. Thanks to the tutorials on Adopt A Do and my practise doing Squidge’s hair every day since January, I was starting to get a little creative myself. This hairdo was also an invented cute girls hairstyle out of necessity – I was running too late to boot up the PC, go online and find a hairdo to make.

It was very easy to do as well. Here’s how you can make the Cute Side Twist Pony in under five minutes for a perfect school look without the stress.

Brush the hair and give it a spray with some water. I use the Vosene Detangler as this eases Squidge’s curly, knotty hair and protects against the dreaded nits. Once it is all long and shiny and ready to go, separate out a chunk on the left-hand side of her head (you can just as easily choose the right, your call!).

Take this chunk and separate it again into two evenly matched lengths and then twist these together. Don’t do them too tightly though, you don’t want them to turn upwards. The final twist should look like this:

Obviously you haven’t done the pony tail yet, unlike the pic, but you get the idea. Now scoop the rest of the hair, along with the length of twisted hair, into a side pony that favours the side you have the twist on – ours is on the left – and seal with the elastic. Then invert your pony and you’re done!

If you have never done an inverted pony before then here’s how.

Create the pony but don’t tie the elastic too tight. Then slip two fingers through the pony between the elastic and the head and pull the loop of the pony tail through the hole made by your fingers. Then tighten the elastic carefully and, if all has gone well and your child has thick hair, you won’t see the elastic and the hair will make a lovely loop.

Little Diva:Aladdin hair

cute girls hairstylesThis style is a copy of that fabby hairdo sported by Jasmine throughout the first Disney Aladdin movie. You know, the one where Robin Williams plays the genie to perfection. Well, he certainly had me weeping with laughter! It is also very easy to do but you will need at least shoulder length hair with most of it long enough to slip into a low pony at the back.

For our version of Aladdin hair, as Squidge calls it, we used a low pony but it looks just as cute if you have it done in a high one. To do this style, I suggest going with damp hair, especially if your little one’s hair is curly, as it makes it that little bit easier to work with. You can see a tutorial from Adopt A Do here.

Little Diva: Twisted braids

cute girls hairstyles
Today’s hairstyle was just fabulous to make and, again, really easy. You just divide the hair down the middle (you can add a zigzag part for extra oomph) and then French braid down the side and into a length. You then twist this up, leaving some hair for a fluffy tail, wrap the band around it, and you’re done!

I did this as a reverse French braid to make it a bit more obvious and chunky, I really like that look and it works better with the twist at the bottom. It took us about ten

minutes to complete and was a hit! Although you can see in the one pic that the left side was a bit uneven, however, we were so proud we didn’t care!

We interrupt our regular broadcasting to watch for monsters!

Today is World Book Day. Amusingly, it appears that this celebration only occurs in the UK. Let’s pause for a moment to think about that. Yes, it is completely insane.

However, here on our sunny (yes yes, we have SUN) shores we get to dress our offspring up in their favourite book character outfits and send them off to school looking utterly adorable. Due to Squidge’s nasty ear infection that had her flat on her back all of last week, we only got notification of both the event and the fact that she had to come dressed up.

Cue much running around with a hunted expression as I realised I had less than four days to either make a costume or get one delivered. Luck was definitely on my side. I got Squidge the most awesome Scooby Doo costume ever. It was on sale and came with standard next day delivery. Brilliant.

Now before you join The Husband in the ranks of those who mutter about Scooby Doo not being a book character I would like to point out that my dear child loves reading her Scooby Doo books and magazines. Over and over again. So, with that in mind, I put to you that Scooby Doo is, in fact, a suitable character for World Book Day. What would you have me do? Dress her as a character from Heart of Darkness?

She’s only five…

SO, without further ado, here comes the monster hunting, monster finding, Scooby Snack eating dude himself… (or herself). Happy World Book Day!

Little Diva: The sidewinder

Today’s hairstyle was quite a challenge, especially with Squidge’s super curly hair. It took ages to get those bits of hair to twist, and stay twisted! However, she was just lovely and said to me at one point, “Mom, you know you’re getting cross with a piece of hair, right? You’re crazy…

Well, if that isn’t telling me what’s what, then nothing is! We adapted the cute girl’s hairstyle from Adopt a Do to fit her curls and her short front ends. Sweet!

Little Diva: Bundled braids of wrath

Sorry, how could I resist a Grapes of Wrath reference, especially since this hairdo really does have that bunch of grapes look to it. This cute girl’s hairdo is also from Adopt A Do and is dead easy. Honestly, a blindfolded frog hopped up (hur hur) on caffeine could put this one together. That’s my kind of style…

Squidge was really ill last week. Not “collapse in a heap and drool” sick, thank goodness, but she did have a nasty ear infection and a roaring temperature. This was a week where we did no hair but plenty of cuddling. And where we decided that we would stick to our goal of doing one funky hair do a day, on school days only, and that we would try and do all the hairstyles on each website we have found with cute girls hairstyles.

So, that means we are sticking to Adopt A Do until we have tried every fabulous hairdo Mindy has created and then we will amble on to someone else. OK, so, back to the hair.

This hairstyle snuck up onto the site while we were battling the germs. Or I missed it before and only found it after. Either way, we both took one look at it and went, “Yeah!”. What a style to celebrate her return to school, hey?

Squidge’s hair is fine, as I mentioned before, so we tend to struggle with hairstyles that flourish with thick hair. This is one “do” that sort of didn’t work for us at first. If your little one has fine hair, then I recommend reducing the number of sections from five to four. It just means that each braid is a bit thicker. Have fun!

Little Diva: The heart braid

cute girls hair heart braidThis hairdo is stunning and I love it. (geddit? Love it? Yeah?) Ok, bad jokes aside this particular hairdo immediately caught Squidge’s eye and she gave me her perfected puppy dog, “Ohhh pleeeeeeeeeease” face when I balked at the idea.

Take a peek at the original version here, yeah, Adopt A Do is far better at this cute girl’s hairstyle stuff than I will ever be, and her heart braid is astonishingly good. I was a little intimidated and didn’t believe the whole “This will take you 1o minutes” thing at all.

I looked at the clock, 8am stared back at me, Squidge batted her eyelashes, and I thought, “Sod it, if it fails we can do something else quickly…

And here it is. A surprisingly simple braid that takes almost exactly ten minutes to create and that looks utterly delicious. Squidge won a Cool Hairstyle Award at school for this one – yeah, my offspring’s school rewards funky hairdos on a Friday, I know it isn’t very educational but I love it.

You can see the video walkthrough here and for those of you who have a child
with the same fine and curly hair as mine, you can avoid those pesky End Of Day Tangles in the loose hair at the back by using a moisturising hairspray. I’ve been using the John Frieda Frizz-Ease Laque hairspray as it does a great job of keeping the tangles out for longer. And it smells YUMMY.

Little Diva: Triple Plait Of Doom

After a week of copying the fab cute girl’s hairstyles from other lovely people, I felt it was time I spread some of my own creative wings. This was brought on by a pang of creative guilt and the fact that my daughter’s headmistress asked me how “on Earth I came up with these ideas” and it physically hurt to confess they were not mine.

So…here is my attempt to console myself. It’s wonky, weird, uneven, lopsided and slightly insane but it is mine. I also kept tabs on how to do it and have since practised it so that the left upper plait doesn’t look like it was eaten by a drunk mole.

To create this cute girl’s hairdo just spray the hair to make it damp and easy to work with, split the hair into two sections at the top (use a rat tail comb to create an even split between the right and left sides. Also create a third section using the hair along the bottom of the head – I used the rat tail comb to create a part just below the ears.

Take the left side and French braid it until you are about 1/3 down, then plait it out so it forms a tail, get her to hold it. Take the right side and do the same. Plait the third chunk as a normal braid and tie it off with a band. Now you need to braid all three together. Start by picking up the hair on the left and the right, use these two sides as if they were strands and continue to French braid down the middle.  Then add in the final, third braid, as you get to the nape of the neck. Make sense?

Yeah, thought not… I will attempt this again but this time with actual pics. If anyone is interested.

It creates (when done properly and not pictured), this crazy, chunky, braid that looks seriously cool. Like a mad French maid did a crazy French braid.
